Russian art history is not a straight line from old to new. Medieval icon traditions, imperial academies, revolutionary avant-garde experimentation, Soviet monumental culture, and contemporary institutional art all coexist in the story.
The major museums matter because they do more than preserve works. They also shape what counts as national heritage and what gets framed as experiment, dissent, or official culture. That institutional layer is part of the art itself.
