Russian music cannot be reduced to one prestige tradition. Conservatory culture and world-famous classical composition are important, but so are folk repertoires, bard song, Soviet estrada, late-Soviet and post-Soviet rock, and contemporary rap and electronic scenes.
Music in Russia often doubles as social commentary. It marks generations, cities, and political moods. The useful question is not which genre is most representative, but which institutions and audiences each genre belongs to.
